Christina is a member of CUPE 2204 and is the mother of two children and an early childhood educator. She lives in Ottawa and works in a community-based child care centre. Needless to say she did not earn a fantastic income. Neither does her blue collar worker husband. When her children were younger and she needed child care in order to work, she applied for a child care subsidy. She went to the appointment and by the end of it the subsidy worker said, “It’s too bad you’re married – even though you and your husband don’t earn enough to pay the full cost you don’t qualify – sorry”. We had to turn to the unregulated sector. For someone who believes strongly in regulated quality child care this was very hard to do – but what choice did I have?
