Kitchen table discussion draws large crowd at CUPE convention

CUPE’s Rethink Child Care team hosted lively kitchen table discussions with more than 40 people in the CUPE Village Tuesday morning. It wasn’t hard to get people talking, as parents and grand-parents shared stories of the stress and frustration they’ve felt trying to secure child care.

Members from across the country spoke of the outrageous cost of care, the challenge of limited hours of operation and long waiting lists for too-few spaces. Quebec members, who shared many of the frustrations of finding child care spots, particularly for families with more than one child, nonetheless expressed their relief that they were spared tens of thousands of dollars of child care fees, thanks to Quebec’s $7-a-day publicly subsidized system.
